A hilite.me alternative with three HTML styling options

Compare portable inline HTML with standalone CSS and Tailwind output for publishing highlighted code.

Start with the HTML you need

hilite.me presents a focused workflow: supply code, choose a language and style, and obtain HTML for another page. Its homepage emphasizes output that does not require external CSS or JavaScript. Syntax Highlighter also offers inline-styled HTML, alongside separate CSS and Tailwind output. The meaningful choice is how your destination accepts styling.

Publishing constraintOutput to consider
You can paste HTML but cannot host CSSInline styles, if the editor preserves them
You control the website filesHTML plus a scoped stylesheet
You work with utility classesTailwind output with its compiled stylesheet and class inventory
Your platform accepts only imagesPNG, with a text alternative

What changes in this workflow

Use searchable language and theme selectors, inspect a live preview, then configure line emphasis, focus, changes or folding without editing the source. The resulting JSON records the presentation settings. A downloaded ZIP keeps the HTML, optional stylesheet, instructions and configuration together.

The preview and download use the same generated model. That reduces the need to recreate styles by hand, but it does not make an arbitrary destination editor preserve them. The export guide explains how to use the wrapper in an existing page and why an external stylesheet must accompany CSS-based output.

Test your actual publishing environment

Begin with a short example containing strings, comments and a long line. Paste or upload the output, then check text colors, scrolling, line backgrounds and link handling. If your CMS sanitizes inline styles, switching to another highlighter alone will not solve that publishing restriction. If the destination removes native folding elements, choose a simpler code block or use an allowed embed.

For email, avoid assuming that a browser preview represents every client. Test in the email system you actually use; complex folding and layout may be unsuitable. Syntax highlighting colors code but does not validate its correctness or reformat its indentation.
